Two Weeks Prior
Footsteps danced across the stones. She was outside, and she felt like a child, rather than a sixteen year old. In some circles, sixteen was still a child, however in the circles Laura circulated in, she was more, far more than a child. So much so that she had never truly been a child. She should have been suspicious about Sarah's intentions, and yet, Laura was too busy being selfish. A day on the outside. The sun burned her skin, she felt the naturally pale flesh heating under the glare of the sun, even despite the chilled air. It was so very rare that she seen the sun, perhaps once or twice in her entire sixteen years.
Laura tipped her face to the sky, relishing in the feeling. The icy air burned her face as well, her nose pinkening from inhaling. She licked her lips, tasting the flavor of snow on her mouth. It was different than her usual moments outside. So different, even the flavors were strange. Emerald eyes shifted from the clouds to the woman sitting on the park bench. Sarah's eyes were watery. Allergies? Probably not, Sarah was a sentimental creature.
Laura edged closer towards Sarah, and Sarah moved her bag to allow for Laura to sit beside her.
”Laura. I..” Sarah paused and lightly grasped the hand of the child who she birthed. ”We have to get you away from there. Away from the Facility.” Laura snatched her hand away, and leapt to her feet.
”Are you crazy?! He'll kill you for even talking about it. He'll probably have me kill you, for even thinking about it. Then he'll kill me! I don't know what you truly think about me, but I'm still me. I'm still..” Laura began to hyperventilate. ”I'm still.. I'm still.. I'm still a person. I'm not trash, I'm not expendable!” Sarah stood and wrapped her arms around Laura though Laura was stronger, and could get away, she simply fought a little, though let the woman hug her.
”That's why, Laura. You are a person. You're my daughter. You might not be my DNA, but you were in my body. I gave you nourishment. I love you. I have a place for you to go.” Laura looked up into Sarah's eyes. ”He'll kill you, you know that.” Sarah shook her head, and smiled into Laura's eyes. ”No, my friend, Emma, she has papers for me. I'm going to disappear. They won't find me, and they won't find you.”
Laura pulled out of Sarah's grasp. ”We need to go now, if we're going to. If we go back, there's no way he's going to let us go again.”
And with that, Sarah and Laura left the park, and headed for the Massachusetts Academy.
